In June, San Diego art monkeys got a double dose of late 1960s sexy sci-fi cheese!
On June 4, Dr. Sketchy’s was invited by the groovy folks at MoPA to hold a mini sketch class during their POP Thursdays Barbarella-themed party. The lovely LEIA posed in MoPA’s lobby, compelling party-goers to grab a pad and capture her intergalactic bodaciousnes.

Lucky monkeys! That’s wasn’t all! Leia reprises her role at our regular session on June 20, with Barbarella playing at the bar, music from the soundtrack playing, and pictures of beautiful blind angel Pygar decorating the stage!

Entries in the “best drawing with your non-dominant hand” contest

The lovely Amelia wins again!

Presto – Barbarella is replaced with the Great Tyrant. “Pretty, pretty, pretty…”

We dragged Ruby Room co-owner Paul onstage to judge the “round robin” contests (teams of 4 art monkeys traded pads every 5 minutes).

Congrats to the winnas! Mmmm…booze.

Farewell art monkeys! We didn’t find Durand Durand, but it was awesome!

Some amazing sketches from our monkeys…Check out more in our flickr pool, and upload yours!

Welcome Art Monkeys to our new home at the fabulous Ruby Room in Hillcrest! For our first official Ruby Room session, Mynx D’Meanor of the Fishnet Follies Burlesque Revue essayed poses in honor of a favorite kink classic, the 2002 film Secretary.

Our art monkeys adapted well to their new environment.

Reverend Dick lent Mynx a, ahem…hand with the poses

The models choose the winner of the “Best Portrait in Red Sharpie” contest. Don’t get it? You must see the film!

The proud winner of a set of colored Sharpies…

And a shot, of course.

Mynx really lost herself in the role.

Some entries in the “Mynx in Bondage” contest

The winner gets a “Pimp my cubicle” playset and humorous sticky notes…just the thing to distract your mind from the soul-sucking tedium that is office work!

Give that girl a hand, she deserves it!

Special thanks to Sean, Paul and Brittany at the Ruby Room, Mynx D’Meanor and Reverend Dick of Fishnet Follies, and our Art Monkeys!

The folks at the Museum of Photographic Arts generously hosted us again for their POP Thursdays event. The theme film for this event was Tim Burton’s tribute to the worst filmmaker of all time, ED WOOD.
Mynx D’Meanor and Reverend Dick of Fishnet Follies Burlesque Revue lent their talents to pose as the legendary Ed Wood and his fuzzy-sweatered muse, Dolores Fuller.

The sketchers included Sketchy regulars and newbies who came to see the show and decided to try their hands at some art monkeying.

Ed gets ready to reveal his taste for angora and skirts!

Oh, the shame!

Special thanks to Reverend Dick, Mynx D’Meanor, and everyone at MoPA’s POP Thursdays, especially Jerald and Sue (below right)! See you kids again soon…

It’s Fall! You know what that means…it’s time to go back to anti art school and drill in the 3 D’s – Dames, Drinks, and Drawing. Local burlesque legend LADY BORGIA is on hand to drive the lesson home.

Talking, chewing gum, and alcohol shots are encouraged in this school!

Star pupil Doni (in the chic hat) sits in the front row, naturally!

POP Thursdays at MoPA welcomed Dr. Sketchy’s for a special sketch session honoring their back to school theme move, Animal House. Sugar and Roxy of a bit o’ burlesque posed as TOGA PARTY revelers in tribute to Bluto and all of his sick Delta buddies.

No toga party is complete without a little drunken Twister!

Our revelers have lost the energy to finish their ping pong game…

Roxy and Peaches select their favorite drunken ping pong drawing…

The talented winner gets a free membership to MoPA!

Turn out the lights, the party’s over…

Some awesome sketchitude…

Special thanks to a bit o’ burlesque, Sue, Lauren, Jerald and everyone at MoPA, and all the attendees who tried their hands at this crazy sketchy thing. TOGA TOGA TOGA!!

Our May session featured jungle temptress Miss Brown Betty of Sultry Savage Burlesque of San Diego

Cuddly Art D. Monkey offered our savage beauty some companionship onstage

Don’t feed the models…unless it’s vodka, of course.

Miss Brown Betty left Art. D.’s arms to judge the “Best depiction of the model as a monkey” contest.

The prize? Sea Monkeys! Warning: They don’t come out looking like the illustration on the packaging.

Til next time art monkeys! We’re gonna escape the heat with a little nap in the treetops.

Burlesque performer Mynx D’Meanor and Indiana Jake embodied Jack the Ripper and one of his unfortunate victims in this month’s creepy yet oddly beautiful session.

Mynx and Jake acted out the entire evening in a series of poses…from the initial meeting,

to the intimate encounter,

to the final outcome.
