In June, San Diego art monkeys got a double dose of late 1960s sexy sci-fi cheese!
On June 4, Dr. Sketchy’s was invited by the groovy folks at MoPA to hold a mini sketch class during their POP Thursdays Barbarella-themed party. The lovely LEIA posed in MoPA’s lobby, compelling party-goers to grab a pad and capture her intergalactic bodaciousnes.
Lucky monkeys! That’s wasn’t all! Leia reprises her role at our regular session on June 20, with Barbarella playing at the bar, music from the soundtrack playing, and pictures of beautiful blind angel Pygar decorating the stage!

We dragged Ruby Room co-owner Paul onstage to judge the “round robin” contests (teams of 4 art monkeys traded pads every 5 minutes).
Congrats to the winnas! Mmmm…booze.

Many art monkeys caught the Eye of the Tiger sketching STMUL8R in our January 2009 session!
Winner and new world champion of the “draw STMUL8R all beat up” contest won a cool punching nun puppet!
Very close runner up…
STMUL8R switched to runner mode for his next set.
STMUL8R got all bendy for his last set.
It looks like this “Draw STMUL8R as Baby New Year” contest may become an annual event!

Congratulations to Nancy Carp! The winner of our first Dr. Sketchy’s Wall of Fame Contest. Nancy sent in her sketch of dark beauty Mija Macabre from our December 2008 session “Dr. Sketchy’s Holiday Pageant on Ice“. Nancy’s piece will be proudly displayed on the Ruby Room’s Dr. Sketchy’s Wall of Fame. Congratulations Nancy! Good luck to everyone in January!

It’s Fall! You know what that means…it’s time to go back to anti art school and drill in the 3 D’s – Dames, Drinks, and Drawing. Local burlesque legend LADY BORGIA is on hand to drive the lesson home.

Our May session featured jungle temptress Miss Brown Betty of Sultry Savage Burlesque of San Diego
Cuddly Art D. Monkey offered our savage beauty some companionship onstage
Don’t feed the models…unless it’s vodka, of course.
Miss Brown Betty left Art. D.’s arms to judge the “Best depiction of the model as a monkey” contest.
The prize? Sea Monkeys! Warning: They don’t come out looking like the illustration on the packaging.

Burlesque performer Mynx D’Meanor and Indiana Jake embodied Jack the Ripper and one of his unfortunate victims in this month’s creepy yet oddly beautiful session.
Mynx and Jake acted out the entire evening in a series of poses…from the initial meeting,
to the intimate encounter,
to the final outcome.

With all the craziness around this time of year, a special thanks goes out to all who participated in our December session – SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS. The festive Ms. Ophelia Handful of Sultry Savage Burlesque came gift wrapped especially for our sketchy pleasure. We even had an unexpeced pop in from Santa himself! Guess he was fortifying himself at the bar for crunchtime. Gifted art monkeys won fancy prizes for their efforts in our special martian/holiday themed contests. The winner of our “best depiction of Ophelia fighting off martians” won a copy of “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians,” arguably the worst holiday film ever made. The winner of “best left handed drawing” won a Santa hat stuffed with a $25 gift card for the fabulous Hash House a Go Go, and the winner of “best depiction of Ophelia as a sexy Mrs. Claus” shared a shot of peppermint schnapps with Ophelia and your humble hostess. Peppermint…that’s Christmasy, right?
